Seen Midland Lately? You'll be pleasently surprised...

A new, vibrant city is emerging as Western Australia’s most exciting urban renewal project takes shape.

The Midland Redevelopment Authority (MRA) began work on the revitalisation of central Midland, including the Railway Workshops, in 2000. Its work is transforming the city centre and invigorating the entire Swan region.

An independent economic impact report shows that over the next 20 years, the project will inject $1.22 billion into the local economy and create about 7566 jobs.

To date the MRA has successfully created new commercial and residential land subdivisions, marketed under the Midland Metro logo … built a new road network opening up the Workshops site and linking it with the city centre … and defined the redevelopment area by attractive landscaping, street furniture and stylish public art works.

  • New apartment buildings, cafes, restaurants and shops are being created at Juniper Gardens, Midland’s new cultural and entertainment heart. When completed in 2008, three major developments will have a total of 101 apartments and almost 3000 sq m of office and commercial space.

  • Woodbridge Lakes, the dress circle residential area around the historic Coal Dam on the Workshops site, includes an award-winning park and lively, engaging public art.

  • The heart of the project is the Railway Workshops site, a superb collection of early 20th century industrial buildings that are central to Midland’s character and sense of place.

  • The MRA plans to adapt the imposing buildings to contemporary uses and create a unique, active urban village in harmony with its industrial heritage setting. The focus will be on creative industries, education and heritage activities, with apartments and townhouses providing a rare lifestyle opportunity.

Other key MRA developments are the State’s largest police complex (including a communication centre, forensics and traffic operations), a premier bulky goods shopping centre and the Midland Health Campus, a 326-bed general hospital (construction planned to start in 2009).

The redevelopment is enhancing Midland’s rich heritage, strengthening its role as a strategic regional centre and bringing widespread benefits – economic, social and environmental - to the city and the region.
