About Claisebrook Village

The Claisebrook Village project focused on transforming Perth’s 19th Century industrial service yard to a modern urban village, while reflecting the area’s existing qualities – the river and its heritage. It was a major benefactor of the Federal Government’s Building Better Cities program (1991-96) and this enabled substantial infrastructure improvements which paved the way for the Village as it is today.

The Village is located just off East Parade in East Perth and comprises 137.5 hectares of riverfront land on the city’s eastern doorstep. It has stunning views of the river and the city skyline, and an abundance of parklands, gardens, lakes and the stunning Cove.  The State’s largest inner-city urban renewal project at the time, it is now home to more than 2,500 new residents.

As the project area is former industrial land (including the former East Perth Gasworks, scrap yards, brick works, stables, warehouses and railway yards), extensive environmental rehabilitation and remediation was undertaken. In addition to this, more than a dozen heritage sites in the area have undergone major restoration and refurbishment works.

Land within Claisebrook Village also represents significant Indigenous cultural heritage.  Some sites were formerly used as camping and meeting places and these have been recognised and conserved – many of which feature on the public art walk, paying homage to the local Aboriginal population. The area was also used as a major camp for miners before they departed for the goldfields towards the end of the 19th Century.

Today, the new community integrates residential housing, shopping and commercial buildings, as well as educational facilities and nearly 22 hectares of recreational parks, open spaces and other public areas.

The current objectives of the project are:

  • Conserve both the natural and built environment through the creation of a sustainable inner city community.
  • Create vibrant and active public open spaces.
  • Attract key businesses and investment to the project area to generate employment and add to Claisebrook’s vibrancy.
  • Conserve the area’s cultural heritage through the restoration of buildings and the delivery of an interpretive public art collection.
  • Promote the benefits of Transit Oriented Development (TOD) to residents and workers in the area to increase the use of public transport.
