Introduction
The Midland Redevelopment Authority is established under the Midland Redevelopment Act 1999 and is responsible to the Minister for Planning; Culture and the Arts. The MRA commenced operations on 1 January 2000.
At present the MRA is concentrating its activities on the Midland Central Redevelopment Area covering part of the town centre, the former Railway Workshops, and the Meat Industry Authority saleyards.
The Workshops are a world-class collection of early 20th century industrial buildings and are central to Midland's sense of place. They form a distinctive precinct where the MRA plans to create a unique, active urban village in harmony with its industrial heritage setting.
The MRA is both a planning agency and a land development agency preparing and selling land for development. As provided by the Act the functions of the MRA are to plan, undertake, promote and coordinate the development of land in the defined redevelopment area.
The MRA is required to prepare and keep under review a Redevelopment Scheme for the area and to control developments in the area. For these purposes, the Act give the MRA powers to deal in land and other assets and to undertake works in the area.
