Building starts on Midland Health Campus

  • Midland

Health Minister Kim Hames today marked the official start of construction on the new Midland Health Campus by laying a concrete foundation stone.

Dr Hames said State and Federal governments had partnered with St John of God Health Care to build and operate the jointly-funded $360.2million, 307-bed public hospital.

“This will be the first new hospital in the area for more than 50 years and deliver world-class health care in a modern, purpose-built facility,” he said.

“The design of the facility is patient centred and inpatient wards will have 80 per cent single rooms. The campus will have about 1,000 staff and for the first time deliver cancer services, intensive care and high dependency care to the eastern suburbs.”

Generous courtyard areas will be provided for respite and family interaction.

“This is a major part of the reform of WA Health which includes the construction of new and expanded hospitals to meet the State’s future health care needs,” the Minister said.

The public hospital will provide free care to public patients and St John of God Health Care will be required to deliver health services of a high standard consistent with or better than other hospitals serving public patients.

St John of God Health Care is also funding the construction and operation of a 60-bed private hospital on the site and this will expand the health care options available to people of Midland and surrounds.

The hospital is scheduled to open in 2015 and replace the existing 194-bed Swan District Hospital.

The hospital’s design allows for expansion to 464 beds when required.

Facilities to include: expanded emergency department; high-dependency and coronary care units; improved cardiology services; cancer services; general surgery (including day surgery); obstetric services, including antenatal and postnatal care; general medical and geriatric services; general paediatrics; expanded rehabilitation services; expanded mental health services; and ambulatory care services.

The Midland Health Campus site is located within the MRA's Midland redevelopment area.
