The Perth Arena's striking design has been acknowledged at the 2013 Australian Institute of Architects National Awards.
Perth Arena architects ARM Architecture and Cameron Chisholm Nicol were awarded the Sir Zelman Cowen Award for Public Architecture at the Australian Institute of Architects National Awards ceremony in Sydney.
The award jury noted the Arena was a “radical, abstract, graphic alien that has landed on the edge of the CBD.
”The Arena’s national win follows on from its success at the State awards, where it received the top honour – the George Temple Poole Award – along with the Award for Public Architecture, an Interior Architecture Award and the Award for Steel Architecture.
According to the state judges, the Arena represented both a coming of age for Perth as a city and a new benchmark for such facilities.
“The architects have delivered a building of great visual complexity, outstanding functionality, a building that has captured the imagination of the general public and delivers for Perth an iconic piece of public infrastructure,” they remarked.
The plaudits continue to flow for Perth Arena in 2014. The Arena was ranked 22nd in the world’s top 200 venues by respected live music industry magazine Pollstar, while venue industry publication VenuesToday placed it in 8th position in the world for venues with a capacity of 15,000-30,000.
Perth Arena’s music and entertainment ticket sales were 479,524 for 2013, the venue’s first full reporting year.
