Perth Arena opens

The new Perth Arena has opened in spectacular style with a mix of community events and international music acts helping to celebrate Perth’s new home of entertainment.

Western Australians were able to take advantage of two behind the scenes glimpses of the new Perth Arena, ahead of its official opening on 10 November.

“It was an exciting time for both the owner, VenuesWest and venue manager, AEG Ogden as we counted down to the opening of Australia’s newest entertainment arena and we wanted the WA public to share in this historic moment,” Interim General Manager Steve Hevern said.

“Plug Into Perth” was staged on Friday 2 November to allow local artists to sound-check the new Arena. The event was headlined by hip-hop sensation Drapht and supported by local favourites Sugar Army, Split Seconds and Stillwater Giants.

The Access All Areas Family Day, on Sunday 4 November, offered the public an opportunity to learn about the design and architecture of the building and to access areas not normally open to the general public, including the backstage areas.

Both community events were supported by the Western Australia Government through the Department of Culture and the Arts and VenuesWest.

The official opening night on Saturday 10 November featured Sir Elton John and his band, who rocked a packed house in what was a memorable night under the stars.

Over the coming months, Perth Arena will host an impressive schedule including the Hyundai Hopman Cup, Weezer, KISS and Motley Crue, P!NK, Black Sabbath, One Direction, The Script, Neil Young and André Rieu.

“In the past, WA has missed out on some acts when touring the country, but that is about to change,” Mr Hevern said. “We will certainly be reminding promoters when planning future tours that Perth now has a state of the art, world-class venue and we want their artists to perform here.”

Sitting within the new Perth City Link precinct, the Perth Arena forms an integral part of the Perth CBD revitalisation. The 15,000 capacity, state-of-the-art arena has been designed to maximise flexibility, and features a permanent tennis court surface, retractable roof and 36 corporate suites.
