Scarborough residents, business owners and the broader community are invited to comment on a suite of new planning documents that will guide future development in the area.
Planning Minister John Day said the draft documents would provide the detailed guidance for development applications within the public realm and on private development sites.
“The new Scarborough planning framework will help ensure future development is high quality, complements the surrounding environment and enhances Scarborough’s unique identity as a popular beachside suburb,” Mr Day said.
“It is intended to provide a more flexible approach to planning, supporting mixed-use development and promoting economic growth in the area. Some increases in height limit will be considered where development applications can demonstrate outstanding performance against design quality and public amenity criteria.
“With the master plan now confirmed for redeveloping the foreshore, the release of these documents for comment is an important next step and I encourage everyone to have their say.”
The Minister said local architects Hames Sharley had been appointed to design the new Beach Hub complex.
“The new facility will be home to the local surf lifesaving operations and provide a venue where visitors can dine with friends, enjoy a cold drink and enjoy the ocean views,” he said.
Registrations of interest are also currently open for interested developers to design, develop and construct a number of new beachfront facilities that will house a mix of commercial tenancies focused on food and beverage that complement existing businesses in the area.
The intention is to secure developers early in the design and construction phase so they could work alongside the architect and lead design team.
