An all night operation at Barrack Street Jetty took place on Thursday for the install of a new public artwork.
From late on Thursday evening well into the early hours of Friday morning pieces of steel framework were craned into place to pave the way for onsite fabrication of the sculpture. A time lapse video of the installation is available for viewing.
The artwork, entitled Signature Ring, reinterprets the thousands of signatures collected from West Australian school students as part of the year 2000 millennium celebrations. The signatures were formerly imprinted in tiles surrounding the Bell Tower that were removed in 2014 to make way for the revitalisation Barrack Street Jetty.
The MRA, in collaboration with the Rotary Club Perth, who thanks to the generosity of a Lotterywest grant, commissioned local artists, Simon Gauntlett and Matthew Ngui, to produce a collective public artwork representative of the student community involved.
Hundreds of new copper tiles etched with the original signatures will now be welded onto the sculpture over the coming weeks. Why not see the progress for yourself at Barrack Street Jetty and share your progress images with #SignatureRing.
