Future vision for Midland city centre unveiled

  • Midland

A draft master plan designed to strengthen Midland’s role as a thriving city centre for Perth’s eastern metropolitan region has been released for public comment by the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (MRA).

MRA Chief Executive Officer Kieran Kinsella said the master plan was an aspirational vision for Midland for the next 15-20 years and included some initiatives that were currently under development, with some additional items for future consideration.

“Midland is identified as one of seven strategic city centres in the State Government's planning policy, Directions 2031 and Beyond, to ensure a diversity of housing, services and activities are provided to support the local and surrounding communities,” Mr Kinsella said.

“It is the MRA’s role to develop a master plan for the Midland Redevelopment Area that will attract new investment into the region and make provisions for future infrastructure and community services.”

Mr Kinsella said over the past 15 years the redevelopment of Midland had seen the introduction of apartment and smaller lot living options, conservation of important local heritage, new employment opportunities and the creation of award winning public spaces – all of which have been embraced by the community.

“This plan proposes to extend the Midland Redevelopment area boundary, improve connectivity within the city centre, increase engagement with the Helena River and create a knowledge hub anchored by world class health and education precincts.”

“By completing the Lloyd Street underpass, and planning for high quality public transport infrastructure, there is an opportunity to continue Midland’s transformation and create living and employment opportunities in close proximity to strong public transport links.

“The draft master plan proposes additional commercial, office and retail space in the city centre, thousands of residential dwellings and new civic and cultural spaces, including proposed tertiary education facilities and the $360million Midland Public Hospital.”

“Midland has the opportunity and the ability to become a major employment destination for the Perth Hills, the Avon Arc and beyond, and to deliver a unique city living environment to support Perth’s growing population.”

The Draft Master Plan is available to view at the MRA's Midland office from Tuesday to Thursday between 8.30am and 5.00pm or the Perth office from Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 5.00pm.
